Todays walk in detail

For todays walk, 26 of us set off from the Alma pub at Mosborough. Down the fields towards Ford bottom where we stopped for a brief breakfast break! We followed the stream along Eckington woods, passing the seldom seen engine house, and after that, a quick visit to Eckington Church before ending with an uphill 'slope' (Gashouse lane). Well-earned refreshments were taken at the Alma and we were rewarded with a little cake for the uphill 'slope'. Thank you to my back markers Lisa and Kath! 

Thanks for coming everyone, we got lucky with the weather, it was a lot drier today than it was yesterday thankfully! 

The weather forecast on Thursday was awful, 19 members arrived wearing appropriate clothing, but we soon became too warm as we meandered through Whiston Meadows towards Canklow Woods. Still no sign of the rain. Brian lead us gently uphill through the plethora of paths, up to a 500 metre ascend to Boston Castle. Taking in the views of industrial Rotherham along the way. A few spots of rain appear just as we stopped for a coffee break. The rain soon stops and we make our way downhill again through the woods, showing signs of Autumn, with browning ferns and yellowing leaves. We return back to Whiston for drinks in The Sitwell. Sixteen ramblers set off from Worksop Road, ready for a scenic 6-mile figure-eight walk. We began by strolling down Lindrick Dale, enjoying the opulent surroundings before cutting across an as-yet unharvested barley field. After a quick hop over the railway tracks, we made our way up to the canal. The next stretch along the canal took us through Turner Wood, where we veered off at Cinder Hill. A brief pause for drinks and snacks by the stream at Tub Row in Shireoaks gave us time to catch our breath before passing the (apparently now closed) Hewett Arms and wandering by the Shireoaks fishing lakes and the historic Shireoaks Hall. Continuing on the paths around Shireoaks, we reconnected with the canal and followed it back up to Cinder Hill. From there, we took a path towards Brincliffe Grange, where we were treated to the sight of a completely unbothered heron, just keeping a few steps in front of us on the path. The route then led us through the woods, where we soon found ourselves carefully crossing Lindrick Golf Course, watching out for stray golf balls! Finally, we retraced our steps up Lindrick Dale and back to the start, wrapping up the walk with some well-earned refreshments at the Red Lion, Todwick.

The Five mile walk from Wentworth village eventually had 19 people and 4 dogs. We went past Wentworth Garden Centre and took the path downhill from the lodge. The herd of young cows ( seen on the prewalk) had completely vanished. The uphill path led us up through Scholes Village, where we stopped for coffee at the Scholes cricket club ground. The groundsman had very kindly given us permission for us to use all the benches and tables for our break.    We then crossed a huge field which was being ploughed up just in front of us ! The farmer then stopped his ploughing to smooth a path for us, by going back and forth with his tractor wheels. We arrived at the bridge across the ponds to admire the view in the sunshine. Then on to past the big house . We all arrived safely back to Wentworth Village. As it was so warm , we decided to have a drink outside the Rockingham Arms Pub. Thankyou to Donna, who offered to backmark and to all the people and dogs who turned up for the walk, making it a very enjoyable morning for everyone.
