Todays walk in detail

Eighteen members plus one dog set off from Torside car park on a beautiful day for walking, visibility was excellent and Annie has taken some great photos. The first mile was along the Trans Pennine Trail as a warm up for the initially steep climb on the Pennine Way after a mile or so the path levels and the walk heads for the shelter at Glossop Low. a misnomer as it is the highest point around. After elevenses at some grouse butts, we set off on the long downward path to Old Glossop and taking the path to Swinshaw Reservoir. After a photoshoot of the four Peacocks and an Ostrich, lunch was taken overlooking the water where some brave souls? were swimming. After the slope up to Glossop Cemetery it was downhill to Little Padfield and by passing the TPT we walked back to Torside. Thank you to all who attended and to Ann Oates who provided details of the walk at short notice and Keith and Angela who changed their itinerary  when our original walk was proved impossible after the Recce.

Sixteen of us set out down the road from Millthorpe then followed the stream through Smeekley Wood. After some discussion with some cyclists on the path we were about to take Donna confirmed this was the correct path. Thank you Donna. We continued along Flask Edge and Brown Edge then dropped down to Totley. Lunch was taken at the recreation ground in Totley. We continued past Woodthorpe Hall and Holmesfield Park Wood to arrive at the George and Dragon, Holmsfield. One person decided to finish there and wait for their lift back. The rest continued down field paths to Millthorpe  and a well earned drink at The Royal Oak in their lovely beer garden. Thanks to Roy with his back marker vest along the narrow, twisty road and also to Kath for back marking and leading the second half of the walk.

9 of us set off from Bretton with heavy laden skies but it was dry. The forecast was for rain in the morning and sun in the afternoon, which is pretty much how it turned out. We had a gentle descent down into Bretton Clough and then to Stoke Ford. At Highlow Beck I regaled the group with the story of the nearby, Highlow Hall, reputed to be the most haunted house in Derbyshire - they were not impressed! Moving on, by the side of the path in Highlow Wood we encountered a series of Ant Hills, 2 1/2 to 3 ft tall, these definitely raised more interest than my ghost story! Coffee stop, in the dry, was taken just before Hazelford. Down again past Hog Hall but once we crossed Highlow Beck the gentle downhill came to an end. From now on there were a few serious uphills: Callow Farm, Offerton Hall and then up the track to the tower above Shatton where we sheltered in the buildings for our lunch break. The sun came out and we enjoyed superb views over the Derbyshire Dales on our way down to Abney village. Across the fields and down once again, through an overgrown path, into Bretton Clough. Then came the hard slog back up to our starting point in Bretton! Replenishment fluid was taken at The Barrel Inn - we could only afford one drink!! Thanks to the brave souls who turned out at short notice and with the poor weather forecast.

15 members and a dog started and finished today's walk from Youlgreave. On what looked likely to be a damp start, it soon improved to being an amazing day for walking. Starting from Youlgreave, we soon headed north along the banks of the Bradford Dale before climbing out, the first uphill, to join the limestone way. We carried on, still slightly uphill, until we had elevenses prior to tackling the down and up of Cale Dale. After skirting Monyash, we started the return leg of the walk by entering the northern part of Lathkill Dale. We had our lunch before descending into the dale fully. The dramatic scenery was astounding and fully appreciated by all. We returned to Youlgreave via Alport and our final uphill path. Refreshments were taken at the Farmyard Inn. Thanks to the back marking trio of Andrew, Roy and Annie and not forgetting the dog, Oscar.
