Todays walk in detail

Fourteen of us set off from Dungworth to do 2 Heritage walks. We stopped  briefly at what was the Royal Hotel where I told the group about the long tradition of singing local Carols  there (sadly, no more). We walked past Cow Gap Farm (an old dairy farm and the home of cutlers from the early 18th centuary). We turned along Game Lane (the only road in the UK with this name) then headed for Loadbrook then Hall Broom (1620). We continued our walk over fields and through woodland to Hill Farn (1855) then Ronksley Hall Farm (early 19th centuary). Our walk took us past the oldest chapel in Stannington (1743) and the 'new' school room (1854), built on land bequeathed by Richard Spoone 'for the education of poor children'. We eventually reached Hill Top Farm and the excellent ice cream parlour where we all indulged in delicious ice cream in the glorious sunshine (I still maintain that the Lemon and Ginger is the best!). Refreshments were taken at the Plough pub in Lower Bradfield. Many thanks to Annie for back marking and to all those who joined me for your excellent company.
